Seventeen Baseball Northwest alumni heard their names called during the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft this past week in Seattle, Wash. The draft was held in conjunction with the MLB All-Star game which saw former top draft picks and BBNW alumni Adley Rutschman (2019 Draft – 1st overall) and Corbin Carroll (2019 Draft – 16th overall) make their All-Star game debuts. The duo were the first BBNW alumni to play in the All-Star game since Blake Snell (2011 Draft – 52nd overall) in 2018.
Of the seventeen selections, seven players were selected out of high school, with the remaining ten being taken from the college ranks. Furthermore, fifteen of the picks were pitchers, with three being drafted as position players.
Day one (rounds 1 & 2) of the draft saw right-handed pitcher Noble Meyer (Jesuit HS) selected 10th overall by the Miami Marlins. Meyer was selected as the 2022-2023 Gatorade Oregon Baseball Player of the Year following a senior season that saw him register 128 strikeouts with just 19 walks across 63 innings on the mound. He is the highest BBNW alumni selected since Rutschman went 1st overall in 2019. Meyer is the highest-picked pitching prospect in the history of Baseball Northwest.
Day two (rounds 3-10) saw six other selections, with left-hander Paul Wilson* (Lakeridge HS) being taken the highest at the 76th overall pick to the Detroit Tigers.
Also taken on day two was Cole Fontenelle (Texas Christian University – Skyline HS) by the Los Angeles Angels in the 7th round. Fontenelle was the highest-picked position player in this year’s draft.
